Word counter
Count characters, words, lines, and bytes of your text in your browser without uploading it.
Text and files you enter never leave this device.
How to use it
- 1
Type or paste your text
Click the text box and write, or paste from any document. The text is read in this browser tab only and is not uploaded.
- 2
Read the five counts
Characters with spaces, characters without spaces, words, lines, and bytes appear under the box and change with every key press. There is no button to press.
- 3
Check against your limit
Compare the number with the limit you need, such as a form field, a post length, or a database column, and edit until it fits.
- 4
Clear when you are done
Press Clear to empty the box. Closing the tab also removes the text, because nothing is stored.
Common use cases
Security and privacy
Your text stays on your device
The text is counted by browser code on your device while you type. No upload route exists for this tool, no request carries your text, and nothing is saved after you close the tab. You can paste private drafts, contracts, or messages without sending them to anyone.
Supported inputs and outputs
What it counts
- Characters as people see them, with spaces and line breaks included
- Characters without any spaces, tabs, or line breaks
- Words separated by spaces, and lines separated by line breaks
- Bytes when the text is saved as UTF-8
FAQ
Is my text uploaded?
No. The counting runs inside your browser. No request that carries your text is sent to Frisbly or anyone else.
How are characters counted?
By what a reader sees as one symbol. A Korean syllable, an emoji with skin tone, a flag, or a letter plus an accent mark is one character. A line break counts as one character when spaces are included.
How are words counted?
A word is a run of characters between spaces or line breaks. This matches Korean spacing and English words. Text without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, counts as one word per run.
Why do bytes differ from characters?
In UTF-8 an English letter takes 1 byte, a Korean syllable takes 3 bytes, and most emoji take 4 bytes or more, so the byte count is usually larger.
Is there a size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Very long text, such as several million characters, may feel slow because everything is counted on your device.
